Rapid Assault Tactics (R.A.T.) is a highly effective hand-to-hand combat system developed by Sifu Paul Vunak specifically for U.S. Navy SEAL Team Six, also known as DEVGRU (Naval Special Warfare Development Group). As Tier 1 operators, SEAL Team Six undertakes some of the most critical and dangerous missions, including special operations, counter-terrorism, and hostage rescue. R.A.T. was designed with these high-stakes scenarios in mind, emphasizing simplicity, directness, and efficiency.

The system has been employed not only by SEAL Team Six but also by organizations such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Department of Defense (DoD), and other high-profile military and law enforcement agencies.

R.A.T. focuses on four primary principles: interception, destruction, pressure, and termination.

Core Elements of Rapid Assault Tactics:

  • Jeet Kune Do (JKD): Bruce Lee's martial philosophy forms the backbone of R.A.T. It emphasizes intercepting and neutralizing an opponent's attack while maintaining adaptability and directness.

  • Filipino Martial Arts (FMA): Includes techniques for stick and knife fighting, as well as empty-hand applications, to deal with armed and unarmed opponents in close quarters.

  • Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ): Grappling and ground-fighting techniques are incorporated for scenarios where fights go to the ground, emphasizing control and submission.

  • 3.0. Differeance
